Descendants of Johann Halbauer

The Halbauer surname first appears in Wallern's then-Lutheran church records in 1654-1659 where Matthis and Ursula Halbauer are listed as birth parents of Elisabeth (1654), Jacob (1656) and Eva (1659), as well as godparents to other children. The surname is in Wallern's 1675 Urbarium (as Halbbauer), however, it is not apparent in a 1589 recording of names in Wallern. The surname also appears in later villages records via the Magistrate Jacob Halbauer in the 1710-1715 period. There are issues in the 1715 and 1720 Urbariums. At first glance, it is strangely missing from the 1715 Urbarium (though it may be recorded incorrectly as Jacobus Halbrecht), as one would expect the 1715 Magistrate to be a taxpayer. Likewise, there is no exact Halbauer in the 1720 Urbarium ...but there are a Jacobus Holbsaur, Christianus Holpaur, Matthias Holczpaur and Sebastianus Hapaur, and since Jacob was known to marry twice and there are no other likely progenitor names in earlier records, these are likely Jacob and (some of) his sons. Hopefully, when earlier church records become available, I'll be able to prove this and possibly connect the line.

The exact line is documented back to a birth in Wallern in 1736 of Sebastian to this Johann Halbauer, born ~1691, and his first wife Elisabeth, though the available records do not state Johann's birth location nor his parents names. So, while I believe the exact Halbauer line likely arrived in Wallern between 1589 and 1654, I can only prove they were present in 1736 and later. Where they came from prior to 1654 (or even 1736) is unknown... but it is a Germanic name.

Notes for Stefan Halbauer:
Stefan Halbauer was born 1824 in House 20, Hauptstraße 33, Valla, Austria-Hungary (present-day Wallern, Austria). He built house number 178 Mittlegasse. He moved to Albert-Kasimir between 1881 and 1884.

Per Josef Graisy of Vienna, Austria:

Which roughly translates too:
Stefan Halbauer built in 1869 this house (178 Middle Lane). He belongs in the large relationship of the Halbauer, whose principal line is the house with the later double number 19/20 (Main Street 31/33). Stefan is the son of Matthias Halbauer and Elizabeth Unger, born 1824. In the year 1860, he married Maria Traudtner, daughter of Paul and Maria Graf from the house 130. Five children were baptized from 1861 to 1874.
Stefan Halbauer and Maria Traudtner had left Wallern. It would be normal to suppose that they emigrated to America. But I discovered in the Registrar's book of Halbturn that Felix Halbauer, son of Stefan and Maria Traudtner, in year 1884 married a Magdalena Deutsch from Pamhagen.
In any case, Felix Halbauer was at this time on the estate farm Kasimer by Halbturn, which is however now of the Hungarian area.

Wallern:
Wallern, Austria is in the Burgenland province of current-day Austria (i.e., in the Austrian Crownland of "Lower Austria" -- Niederösterreich) and is located about 40 miles south-east of Vienna, between the Neusiedler See and the border of Hungary. The border is about 3 miles south and Budapest, Hungary is about 100 miles east.
The Burgenland was in the Hungarian county of Vas (Castrifieri prior to 1830) and under Hungarian administration until it was ceded to Austria by Hungary by the Treaty of Trianon in 1921, following the World War I dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It borders Hungary and Slovenia (formerly part of Yugoslavia). Settled mostly by southern Germans as early as the twelfth century, "Burgenland" translates to "castle country" and castles connote warfare, borderland, feudalism etc. Since the Empire was a mixture of races and religions, Croatian, Slovene (Slav) and Hungarian (Magyar) minorities are also found, but German language and customs predominate. A series of natural, political and economic disasters caused a major emigration during the period 1890-1913. Upwards of forty thousand Burgenlanders came to the United States.
German (including written script) was the language of choice whenever the locality was settled by Germans (there was massive migration from Germany in the 1700's and early 1800's), or if the pastor or priest happened to be German. Hungarian was used in localities with few Germans and in the period after the Revolution of 1848. Latin was used frequently also. The area was predominantly Catholic.

Barbara Rabbe, who traveled in the Burgenland in 1998, provides this description of current-day Wallern:
Wallern -- a very unique town -- in a flat area with farms outside of town in long narrow rectangles. Men all have tractors that they use to transport themselves to their fields. They park them in big stucco sheds that open to alleys behind their houses. Most of the houses are walled and connected making a solid wall facing the street and are right on it. They each have a front door and a big fancy garage door that opens from the street into their houses and courtyard. Their backyards are walled in also. The crops were grapes, tomatoes in plastic greenhouses, hay, sunflowers and some kind of greens. Every long rectangle was a different crop so I don't know how many each farmer tends or owns. Our guide said most construction jobs in Vienna are done by Burgenlanders as there isn't enough farmland to support them all. Some new houses are being built, same style as old, brick blocks covered with stucco but not walled in.
We stopped by a lovely Gasthaus on the edge of town. No English spoken there. I saw "salat" and asked if "kalt" and the young waiter nodded. It was a beautiful gourmet lunch, a combination of chopped vegetables with white cheese cubes and herbs. The place was filled with beautifully made unusual crafts. The cemetery adjoining the church was quite unique. The Austrians recycle their graves about every 20-30 years so the oldest graves were from the 1960's. They all had large, shiny new tombstones for each family. The vertical portion at the back had the family name and some had pictures next to the individual's names and the horizontal portion was about a foot high and ran the length of the grave and was used as a planter. All were meticulously planted and cared for. I saw all the family names that I see when I read the church records. This was a moving moment. The main tower in town has an occupied stork nest on top, a huge thing and intricately woven with reeds. It looks like a thriving area, people of all ages and lots of bike riding around town and some families riding along paved road between fields and highway. Great place for biking, very flat. We saw lots of bikes in racks on way back to Vienna, perhaps this is where they bike for the day. Every so often along the highway, as we traveled from village to village, we noticed a religious monument at the end of the row of crops.

Joseph Weiss came first in Dec 1888 to find a place and Theresia Halbauer Weiss came over with her 3 living children in Oct or Nov 1889. It is not known where the family first resided in the US. They moved to Roseville Twp, Kandiyohi Co (abutts Lake Henry, Zion and Paynesville Twps in Stearns Co) in 1891 and stayed until at least 1895. By early 1900, they were on a rented farm on the eastern shore of Big Fish Lake in Section 28 of Collegeville Twp of Stearns County, MN. They moved to Munson Twp (near Roscoe, MN) in March or April 1900 and stayed in that area thereafter.
One of Theresia Halbauer's brothers was known as "Hanselvater" (literally, Johnny Father). He came to the US before 1895 and later went to Canada. The nuns who took care of him in his final years inherited all or most of his Canadian property. "Hanselvater" was, almost certainly, Johann.
Her twice-widowed mother, Maria, emigrated in 1900 to St. Paul, MN.
Her sister, Marie Rose, came c.1885-7 to St. Paul. MN.
The Joseph Halbauer in section 2 of Lake Henry township in 1896 was a first cousin. He came from Valla, Austria-Hungary with parents Michael and Marie (Eberstorfer) Halbauer.

An undated German-language Christmas card found among the possessions of Joe Weiss (Theresia's son) states:
Deurer Herr freund!

and translates as:
Dear Friend!  From the bottom of my heart I wish you everything that the dear Lord in his grace and wisdom on the first Christmas day wished his well-meaning children through the angel's voices: "Peace on Earth to those men who are good-willed" along with sincere wishes for a "Happy New Year."

It contained the following name and address on the back of the card: Mr. Felex Halbauer, No. 1074 Gaultheir St., St. Paul, Minn.
There is no Gaultheir Street in St. Paul but there is a Galtier Street. 1074 Galtier is N-NW of downtown St. Paul and W-SW of Como Zoo, about equidistant between the two. Whether this was the recipient address or the address of the sender is unclear. This Felex is Theresia Halbauer's nephew, Felix, son of her brother Felix.

"First Emigrants: Wallern, Pamhagen, St. Andrä, Halbturn, Tadten"
- From the Burgenlaendische Gemeinschaft newsletter, 11/12 2001, Nr.374
In the second half of the 19th century the wave of emigration reached Hungary. The first part of Burgenland to be swept by this wave was the "Seewinkel," which at the time was hard hit by an economic crisis, as a result of which emigration started with a bang in large numbers in 1870. This was a time of numerous crop failures, Lake Neusiedl was drying up, and the tax burden was crushing. Then there was a mice plague in 1873-74. To top it all, a devastating hail destroyed the crops on July 9, 1875, resulting in an unheard-of famine: "Bei Ümitz (Illmitz) und Obadlau (Apetlon) faungt si da Hunga aon." (The starvation belt starts in Illmitz and Apetlon.)
At the time of the big famine, in 1870, Josef Halbauer (born 1840, uncle to Theresa) and Andreas Halbauer (born 1864, Josef's son, 1st cousin to Theresa) left Wallern for the United States. Josef settled in St. Martin and Andreas in St. Paul. Until the turn of the century at least 85 villagers of Wallern were to migrate to the American mid-west. Wallern was, incidentally, the hometown of the earliest emigrant to Canada we know of: Heinrich Schneider, who settled in Regina in 1902. Very few people were to follow in his footsteps before the first world war. The Canada migration proper did not start until 1924, when the United States severely curtailed immigration. The early migrants moved to western Canada, later migrants (in the 1950s) would mostly go to Toronto...

Albértkázmérpuszta is near Halbturn, which is in the Burgenland right next to the Hungarian border and to the east of the Neusiedler See. Just to the east of Halbturn, (about 3 kms) the first village in Hungary is Albertkazmerpuszta. A "puszta" originally was a work camp and there were "puszta majors and puszta minors". The aristocratic estate holdings were so vast that it could take hours (even days) to travel from a village like Halbturn to work the outer reaches. This meant the loss of much work time, so the landowner would, in effect, create a camp with wells and huts and the workers would live there during the week or growing season and return to their homes only every so often. Many of these work camps were eventually deserted (the word "puszta" means deserted, or farmstead or ranch or lowland plain) but others turned into villages after the estates were broken up. Albertkazmerpuszta was one such. The inhabitants would have used the church in Halbturn. The villages of Wittmannshof, Edmundshof, Kleylehof ("hof" is the German equivalent of puszta) which are near Halbturn, as well as Irenmajor and Ujszajdamajor in Hungary were all work camps originally.
Albert Kasimir was the landowner. He was better known as Duke Albert Casimir von Sachsen-Teschen, born 1738 in Dresden, who in 1766 married Archduchess Maria Christina, favorite daughter of Maria Theresia. Maria Theresia gave the huge Ungarisch-Altenburg (Magyar-Ovar) Estate to the couple. Maria Christina died in 1798, Albert Casimir in 1822. His art collection, the "Albertina", is well known.
An 1873 Gazeteer shows that Albertkazmerpuszta (also shown as Kazimir) was in the Jaras (Bezirk-district) of Nezsider (Neusiedel) in the Megye (Comitat-county) of Moson. It along with Wittmannsdorf, Farkaskut, Jesschof and Szolnoki) were part of the parish of Feltorony. Total population in 1873 was 2473.

Notes for Felix Halbauer:
This is the Felix Halbauer who lived on Galtier Street in St. Paul, MN.

An undated German-language Christmas card found among the possessions of Joe Weiss states:
Deurer Herr freund!

and translates as:
Dear Friend!  From the bottom of my heart I wish you everything that the dear Lord in his grace and wisdom on the first Christmas day wished his well-meaning children through the angel's voices: "Peace on Earth to those men who are good-willed" along with sincere wishes for a "Happy New Year."

It contained the following name and address on the back of the card:
Mr.

This "Felex" is Felix, son of Felix Halbauer and a first cousin to Joe Weiss.

Notes for Franciscus (Frank F) Weiss:
Frank Weiss' social security application (dated December 28, 1950) was assigned # 476-34-3025. He lists his name as Frank F. Weiss, with parents Joseph Weiss and Theresa Halbauer. He gives his birth date as March 20, 1889 and birth location as Rasimir or Kasimir, Austria (the first letter of the name of the city has stamped text obliterating part of it). He lists 607 Edmund Ave, St. Paul, MN as his current address and the Church of St Agnes as his current employer. He indicates he was 61 on his last birthday (which is consistent with his claimed birth date and the application date).
Subsequent research reveals his birthplace was Albértkázmérpuszta, Austria-Hungary, known as Albert-Kasimir or Kasimir for short. Kasimir was a communal farm settlement associated with the town of Féltorony, Hungary, which is where Frank's father, Joseph Weiss, was born.

Notes for Margaret Spohn:
   1) Margaret Spohn was adopted by the Peter Spohn family. She was an orphan from New York who came west on an "orphan train." The legend is that they loaded the train in New York, headed west, and offered the children for adoption at every stop. Each child continued westward until adopted.
   2) Margaret walked out on Frank and the children when the children were still young. She never returned. The story is that Frank came home one day to find that Margaret had packed her bags and left. Frank raised their two children.
