Neudörfl an der Leitha (Lajta-Szent-Miklós, old Sankt Niklas)
Village of 3526 residents in the Mattersburg district.

Neudörfl is one of those villages that can cause confusion as there is a Neudorf Bei Parndorf near the Neusiedler See and a Neudorf Bei Landsee further south. Both drop the "L" in the spelling.

Neudörfl's Hungarian name was Lajtas-szent-miklos. It is just a short distance from Wiener Neustadt in the small section that bumps out from the Burgenland border in that area. Bad Sauerbrunn and Mattersburg are to the southeast. There are now about 3900 inhabitants. First mentioned as early as 1246, but traces of Bronze Age artifacts and other Celtic remains have been found there, so it's quite an ancient place. Part of the Esterhazy Domain; there are still remains of one of their 17th century castles (a Portal). A nice looking village, it lays along the nearby Leitha River and the Zillingdorfer forest, not far from the beginning of the Rosaliengeberge. Church is the Kath. Pfarrkirche Mariae Geburt (1669; restored 1974). There is also a chapel dedicated to Johannes Nepomuk dating from 1745. A fair amount of new building has occurred since WW-II; maybe part of a spillover from Wiener Neustadt.

Not too many BB members from this part of the Burgenland. I guess it was too close to the action in the Vienna area - available jobs, etc. Most of our Burgenland immigrants came from either the north around the Lake (late 1800's) or the south (Güssing & Jennersdorf districts, a little later in the early 1900's).
