Joseph was the son of Joseph Osterbauer (1824-?) and Theresia Schabauer (1816-1859); they married in Hochneukirchen, Lower Austria in 1847. Theresia and her daughter, also named Theresia, died in East Bristol, Dane County, WI, 11 days after they arrived in NY off of the ship “Laura”. Joseph and Theresia were parents to Joseph (1850-1932), Mathias (1853-1937 IA), Franz Xavier (1856-1931 British Columbia) and Theresia (1859-1859). After the death of their mother, sister and father's disappearance, the boys settled in East Bristol, WI, then Algona, IA in about 1875.

Joseph’s first wife, Katherine Walter, passed away in 1887 during the birth of their fifth child. In 1887, Anna Sanftner, who would become Joseph’s second wife, arrived in NY. Anna was born in Mönchhof, Burgenland in 1860. In 1888, Anna Sanftner and Joseph Osterbauer were married. Anna and Joseph had four more children. The family moved to Wyoming, MN in 1902, where they farmed until their deaths in 1926 (Anna) and 1932 (Joseph).
