Sankt Kathrein: Birth, Marriage and Death Records

This database is courtesy of BB member Frank Teklits, who worked diligently to transcribe the original Catholic church records for Sankt Kathrein (Hungarian: [Pósa-]Szent-Katalin; Kroat: Katalena). It was supplemented by Werner Stubits, who found 19 birth records dated from 15 Aug 1815 to 9 Feb 1816 that were on a page that was not transcribed by Frank. It was further supplemented by Thomas Steichen, who found 9 birth records dated from 9 Oct 1867 to 19 Dec 1867 that also were not transcribed by Frank. It is evident that Frank "Americanized" given names and standardized surnames (though usually providing the recorded surname in a note).

As noted above, Frank transcribed the original church records (as obtained from the parish) for 1804-1895, not the duplicates that were sent to the Hungarian government and later microfilmed by FamilySearch. Nonetheless, for the birth records, we have added image and line numbers from the duplicate images for the era (1828-1895) that they are available. Keep in mind that the duplicates were subject to copying errors, so put primary trust in Frank's transcription.

In addition, the years 1867 to 1870 appear twice in the duplicate birth images, being found on images 71-78 and 82-90. However, it is apparent that Frank's transcription most closely matches the years in images 82-90. The 9 additional records found for 1867 were on image 73. There also were 7 record pairs in the duplicated images that are quite similar but still have at least one significant difference between the records. These are marked in the notes as "Similar records found on different pages."

The combinded database consists of 3,247 birth records from 1804 to 1895, 2,846 death records from 1804 to 1895, and 789 marriage records from 1804 to 1905.

Sankt Kathrein ([Pósa-]Szent-Katalin) was also the official recording location for
- Edlitz (Abdalóc),
- Kroatisch Ehrensdorf (Horváthásos), and
- Harmisch (Hovárdos) during this time.

Upon completion, the full database was shared with FamilySearch (LDS) and the files were made available in its Library. However, the files were not made accessible over the internet except from Latter-day Saints-affiliated locations. Given that, Frank agreed to allow the BB to make the records available online via our website, and the links in the table below lead to the files. Copyright remains with Frank Teklits.
