Josefin Eddings

Josefin Eddings, 78, of Bountiful, Utah, passed away on December 24, 2013 after suffering a stroke.

Josefin was born March 15, 1935 in the small village of Lindgraben in Burgenland, Austria, daughter of Alois and Maria Kreiner.

She learned to work hard from a very early age while living in a small peasant village, where everything had to be grown or made by hand.

As a young woman she obtained a domestic position with a family in the city of Vienna, and it was in that city where she met her future husband, G. Franklin Eddings, who was serving in the U.S. Army at that time.

After a brief chance meeting in Vienna, and an extended courtship by mail, they were wed on December 18, 1956 in Baden, Austria, and their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on Dec. 11, 1958. The young couple established their first home in Salt Lake City, Utah and shortly thereafter moved to Bountiful where they have resided for the past 53 years.

Josefin was an example of hard work and service to others throughout her life. She never thought of herself and was always "moving" as her husband would say. She liked to be busy and was always working in the yard, cooking, gardening or doing things for her husband, family members, friends and neighbors. She helped her music teacher husband in the family business by providing piano lessons to beginning students. Her inexhaustible patience was invaluable in helping young children discover the joy of music.

Raised in the Catholic church, she became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints soon after moving to Utah, and served in many positions over the years. She could always be counted on to provide service to others who were in need, and her faith was very important to her. Her spiritual strength was a great example to her family and to all who knew her. She was always kind in word and in deed, and was beloved by all.

She is survived by her husband, G. Franklin Eddings; her three sisters, Anna Köck, Petronell, Austria; Erni Laussegger (Alfred), Oberwaltersdorf, Austria; Resi Gugler (Herbert), Lindgraben, Austria; her seven children, Arnold Eddings (Debbie), North Salt Lake; Sonja Brown (Lowell), Northridge, CA; Eric Eddings (Julie), Centerville; Roy Eddings, Logan; Calvin Eddings (Kristene), Bountiful; Xiomara Eddings, Atlanta, GA; Mark Eddings (Sarajane), Knoxville, TN, her 19 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Family requests no floral tributes, but suggests contributions to the Perpetual Education Fund, 50 East North Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah 84150.

Graveside services were held December 26, 2013 at the Bountiful City Cemetery, and a memorial service was held December 26, 2013 at the LDS Chapel at 1250 South Main, Bountiful, Utah.

Ida Degen

Ida Degen, 87, of Reno, Nevada, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2013 to reunite in heaven with Helmuth, her husband of 52 years.

Born on January 22, 1926, Ida spent her early childhood on a farm in Tobaj, Austria. Her parents emigrated to the US with her older brother, leaving the youngest two children with grandparents.

At 16, with WW2 already in progress, she made her way independently to Nuremberg where she worked with the Red Cross and others until she was able to rejoin her mother in NYC after the war. Shortly after her arrival, she met her soul-mate and they married a year later.

During much of their marriage, the couple owned and operated a deli near Yankee Stadium.

Ida was a wonderful cook and a fabulous mother to their two children. Though her growing-up years were quite challenging, she developed a very sweet and loving disposition. She cherished all forms of nature, particularly animals, and pets were always part of her life.

Ballroom dancing and music were passions and she had a strong soprano voice, delighting many as part of her Lutheran church choir and a host of singing clubs.

And she gifted her handiwork to those she loved through the many afghans she crocheted to grace their homes.

Ida relocated from New York to Los Angeles in 2001 when her husband died, and she moved to Reno in 2006, both times following her daughter.

Her family and friends will sorely miss her.

She is survived by her son Carl (Nancy) Degen, daughter Lillian (Steve) Frank, granddaughters Amy (Gene) Broughman and Laurie (Kev) Jarjokian, and great grandson Tyler Jarjokian.

Her cremains will be buried at Calverton VA Cemetery in New York, beside her husband. A memorial service will take place on December 30 at 1 p.m. at Five Star Premier Residence at 3201 Plumas Street. The family wishes to thank the staffs of Five Star Premier Residence, Gentiva Hospice, and Dr. Jeffrey Gingold for their extraordinary care and compassion.

Angela Kessler (née Zach), 75, of Montauk, Long Island, New York, passed away peacefully on February 9th, 2013.

She was born in her beloved town of Gerersdorf bei Güssing, Austria on July 22, 1937 - where she traveled back as often as she could to visit and spend time with family and friends.

Angela came to the United States in 1949, and she married John Kessler on November 10, 1957. Angela and John have 2 children, Richard and Lorraine, and 7 grandchildren whom she so enjoyed spending time with whether she was baking, gardening, fishing or swimming with them.

Angela was an avid volunteer at her original parish in the Bronx, Holy Family. Not only was she a Lector and Eucharistic Minister, but she was a coach for the girls youth softball teams and the girls junior basketball teams which she coached to a CYO Archdiocese title in 1970.

She worked as a teacher's aide for the special education class for 8 years at Holy Family and St. Raymond's elementary schools. Angela graduated cum laude with a BS in Education from CUNY Lehman in 1975 and taught for 10 years at Our Lady Queen of Angels elementary school in East Harlem, New York. She implemented and directed many after school programs, which she secured government grants for.

Angela's never ending community support eventually got her appointed to Community Board #9 in the Bronx in 1978 where she began volunteering as an administrative assistant for 3 years; was then appointed Chairperson of Land & Zoning Committee for 2 years; appointed Chairperson of the Youth Service Planning Committee for 2 years; appointed Assistant District Manager of Community Board #9 in 1985 and was interim District Manager during vacancies until she retired in 1993.

Her adventurous spirit and enjoyment of beaches helped her discover her second home in Montauk, Long Island, whereby she attained her captain's license for the charter fishing trips she and John would run once they retired. In between fishing trips and days at the beach, Angela tended to her vast outdoor garden and indoor flowers and plants; she and John sang on the choir at their parish church, St. Theresa's and enjoyed the many friends they had in the Montauk area in addition to all those who ventured to "the end" to visit with them.

Rev. Eric Gritsch

The Rev. Eric W. Gritsch, a prominent Lutheran theologian, educator and author whose teaching career at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pa., spanned more than three decades, died Dec. 29 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center of complications from an infection. The longtime Canton resident was 81. Michael Cooper-White, president of the Lutheran Theological Seminary, called Dr. Gritsch "one of the giants in 20th-century Lutheranism." "I am among hundreds of women and men privileged to have sat at his feet during his third of a century as a professor here at Gettysburg Seminary," he said. "Beyond the classroom and campus, during times of crisis over civil rights and the Vietnam War, his prophetic voice taught us what it means to be a 'public theologian.' "

The son a of Lutheran pastor and a homemaker, Eric Walter Gritsch was born in Neuhaus am Klausenbach, Austria, and raised in Bernstein, Austria, where his father had moved to take over a congregation in the town. When Adolf Hitler annexed Austria on March 13, 1938, Dr. Gritsch and his parents traveled to Vienna. "From the shoulders of my father I saw Hitler on a platform in the distance, raising his right arm and bellowing into loudspeakers," wrote Dr. Gritsch in his memoir, "The Boy from the Burgenland: From Hitler Youth to Seminary Professor."

"The annexation of Austria was a tragic event. The regime of Hitler 'coordinated' all levels of society into a tyrannical whole. I became estranged from my parents when I became a Hitler Youth at age 10; membership was part of compulsory education," wrote Dr. Gritsch, who rose to pack leader. When he asked the young man who was in charge of the district what would happen if they ignored orders, he was told, "We will treat them like deserters in the army and shoot them." "That remark cost me much sleep for a long time and made me meditate about the Nuremberg trials of Nazi leaders after the war. Did they do all those horrible things because they were afraid to be shot if they did not obey orders?" he wrote.

Dr. Gritsch's father, who had been active in an anti-Nazi underground movement, was betrayed by a school principal and was called up for service in the German army. "I never saw my father again after 1941; my mother discovered by 1948 that her husband had died on a death march as a Russian prisoner of war," he wrote. By the end of 1944, Dr. Gritsch was sent with other members of the Hitler Youth and older men to the Hungarian border. Dr. Gritsch later deserted and took refuge in an abandoned farmhouse and changed out of his uniform to elude capture. He eventually returned home and resumed his high school education at the Oberschutzen Gymnasium after the war.

Dr. Gritsch earned a degree in 1952 in Protestant theology from the University of Vienna. Named a Fulbright scholar, he traveled to Yale University, where he earned a master's degree in 1954 in sacred theology. He completed ministerial studies in Austria and served as vicar of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Austria in the Bruck an der Mur. In 1957, he immigrated to the United States and returned to Yale, where he earned his doctorate in 1960. While at Yale, he studied with the noted theologian and author D. H. Richard Niebuhr, who was professor of Christian ethics and director of graduate studies, and whose brother, Reinhold Niebuhr, was the author of "The Nature and Destiny of Man."

Dr. Gritsch became a U.S. citizen in 1962, the same year he was ordained into what is now the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. From 1959 to 1961, he taught at Wellesley College, until being called to the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, said his wife of 17 years, Bonnie Brobst. At the seminary, Dr. Gritsch taught church history and Reformation studies until retiring in 1994. "Generations of seminary students were formed by his outstanding teaching and scholarship, his deep love for the Gospel and church, not least of all by his wit, which produced many memorable lines and Gritsch-isms," Ms. Brobst said.

He was co-author, with Robert Jenson, of "Lutheranism: The Theological Movement and Its Confessional Writings." "It was likely the most influential book for a generation of Lutheran seminarians and clergy, both at Gettysburg Seminary and across the continent," Ms. Brobst said.

Dr. Gritsch was the first director in 1970 of the seminary's Institute for Luther Studies, which brought prominent international scholars to Gettysburg for a series of scholarly conferences, now known as the Martin Luther Colloquy. He also lectured at the Catholic University of America and was an adjunct faculty member at the Ecumenical Institute of St. Mary's Seminary & University in Roland Park. He also taught at the Melanchthon Institute in Houston, and was a guest lecturer at California Lutheran University.

Dr. Gritsch had served as interim pastor at Zion Church of the City of Baltimore, which is at City Hall Plaza, where he was also a member and director of the Forum for German Culture. He was a member of Lutheran organizations, including the International Congress for Luther Research, and had been a member of the Lutheran-Roman Catholic Dialogue in North America.

On the 50th anniversary last fall of his ordination, "Lutheranism, Legacy and Future: Essays in Honor of Eric W. Gritsch," was published. His last book, "Christendumb," will be published this spring. Dr. Gritsch, who enjoyed keeping in touch with former students, was an opera buff, gourmet cook and liked traveling. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. March 2 at his church, 400 E. Lexington St.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four foster daughters, Patricia Bouthner of Severn, Valerie Adams of San Francisco, Erika Bell of Wichita, Kan., and Debbie Cole of Washington state; and a brother, Gunther Gritsch of Vienna. An earlier marriage to the former Ruth Sandman ended in divorce.
