Julius "Jay" Koch

1926 - 2007

Julius "Jay" Koch, a former New York police officer and Ronald Reagan "Doppelgänger" (look-alike) who doubled as the former president in movies and public appearances since the 1980s, died of heart failure on March 19, 2007 at the age of 81 in Port Huemene, California. He had been battling cancer since the summer.

Born Julius Koch, Jr. on February 25, 1926 in Rechnitz, Burgenland, Austria, he immigrated with his parents Julius Sr. and Irma to the United States when he was three, settling in Brooklyn.

As a boy, Koch would go fishing with his father at Sheep's Head Bay in Brooklyn and developed a love for the sea and for sailing. He later served in the United States Navy toward the end of World War II. At retirement with the rank of sergeant in 1969, he moved to California, where Ronald Reagan was then governor. Koch loved Southern California in part because of its warmer climate, providing him with a year-round opportunity to venture out in his sailboat. With his thatch of thick dark hair, warm smile and twinkling eyes, he bore a remarkable resemblance to the former U.S. president. His wife, Sylvia, submitted his photo without his knowledge for a National Enquirer look-alike contest in 1980, and he won, casting him in the Reagan’s stand-in role for the next 25 years. He taught himself to imitate Reagan’s speaking voice and mannerisms, signed with an agent and made hundreds of appearances at conferences, parties and in advertisements, television and films, including Back to the Future Part II (1989) and Hot Shots! Part Deux (1993).

In addition to his wife and, he is survived by a brother, Ernest; daughters, Maureen Foster and Jackie Schaeffer; a son, Brian Jay Koch; and four grandchildren, Justin and Amber Koch and Harrison and Faith Foster.

Koch's family planned to scatter his ashes off Channel Islands Harbor on April 14.
